Ear Wax Removal at Gloucestershire Pharmacy in Cheltenham
Ear wax plays a vital role in protecting and cleaning your ear canal, but excessive build-up can lead to discomfort, hearing problems, and even infections. Earwax buildup is a common issue in the UK, with approximately 2.3 million people requiring professional removal annually. However, access to NHS earwax removal services has significantly declined, leaving millions without adequate ear care and facing long waiting times that can impact their quality of life.
At Gloucestershire Pharmacy in Cheltenham, we specialise in safe and professional microsuction ear wax removal, widely regarded as the most effective and comfortable solution. Our experienced team provides expert care in a clean and welcoming environment, ensuring your ears are healthy and your hearing is clear. Whether you’re experiencing blocked ears, ringing, or reduced hearing, choosing private earwax removal services offers faster access to professional care and immediate relief from symptoms.
What is ear wax and why is it a problem?
Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance essential for protecting and maintaining the health of your ears. Normally, your ears clear wax naturally, preventing build-up. However, some people experience excessive ear wax, which can lead to discomfort and may require treatment.
You might have a build-up of ear wax if you experience:
- trouble hearing
- persistent earaches
- sore and itchy ears
If you are struggling with tinnitus (ringing in the ears), our team can assess your needs and determine if earwax removal is the right solution for you, or if you need more specialist care.
Your ear health matters. Book an ear health check at Gloucestershire Pharmacy for expert support and advice. In as little as 30 minutes, our trained pharmacy team can identify the cause of your symptoms and safely remove ear wax, helping you feel better and hear clearly.
What should I do if I think my ear wax needs treatment?
Excessive ear wax can be treated with softening drops or olive oil, syringing, or microsuction. The first step is always to use a softening drop or oil – this may resolve the issue and will make any subsequent treatment more successful. Do not use cotton buds, as they compact wax and disrupt the natural clearance process in your ear canal.
If you are unsure about the best course of action for you, reach out to our team, who are on hand to offer support and advice – and who can talk you through the microsuction process if this sounds like the best option for you.
What is microsuction?
Microsuction is the safest and most effective way to remove ear wax. It works by inserting a low-pressure suction probe into the ear. The probe will be controlled by one of our trained clinicians who will be wearing a microscope that will allow them to look clearly into the ear canal to remove the wax.
This procedure is painless and does not involve water being introduced into the ear canal, as syringing does. This makes microsuction a more suitable option for individuals with conditions such as a perforated eardrum or other ear-related issues requiring gentle and precise treatment.
It is recommended to use olive oil ear drops a week before your appointment. Speak to our pharmacist for further advice.

Is there any risk from the procedure?
At Gloucestershire Pharmacy in Cheltenham, we are committed to providing safe and professional microsuction ear wax removal to help you maintain your ear health. While microsuction is a highly effective, safe, and gentle procedure, it’s important to be aware of some temporary effects you may experience during or after the process:
- A cold feeling in your ears
- Increased sensitivity to sounds
- Disorientation or dizziness
- Throbbing or an ache in your ears
These symptoms are normal and will subside within 24 hours as your ears adjust. We advise to keep your ears dry for 24 hours.
Unlike syringing, microsuction is carried out under direct vision to avoid damage to the ear drum. In addition, while syringing forces pressurised water into the ear canal, this is not the case with microsuction. As such, there is a very small risk of infections or minor trauma to the ear canal, which can cause irritation.
What if the wax cannot be removed from my ears using microsuction?
If you have used a softening agent as recommended before your procedure, this should help ensure successful wax removal. However, if you have hard, impacted wax that has not been adequately softened, it may not be possible to remove all of it in a single appointment. In such cases, we will remove as much wax as possible and provide advice on further treatment options.
If necessary, we may use additional instruments to assist with the procedure, and this will be explained to you at the time. Please note that the appointment fee will still apply. If you think you may have impacted wax, we recommend discussing this with your practice nurse or audiologist, as a longer course of softening agents may be needed before microsuction. Should your wax be sufficiently softened but still not fully removed, we will arrange a follow-up appointment at our Cheltenham clinic to complete the process.
How much does it cost?
Our microsuction service costs £60 for one ear or £90 for both.
